A DISORDER OF HIGH PROPORTION IN INDIA
17.9.2023
According to WHO study (ICMR-INDIAB) in 2022, the percentage of diabetics in urban India is 25% and in rural India it is nearly 10%. Considering India’s population of 140 crores, the urban diabetic population will be 35 crores and rural one will be 14 crores between the age group of 55-64, which is higher than China and USA. With almost 35% of its population getting diabetic, India has a major health issue to deal with in the years to come.
The 2-year COVID period is certainly added to the diabetic population of India particularly in the Urban areas. The work-from-home culture and the sedentary life style with a lot of reliance on online shopping, has made the people a little more lethargic and on a casual look around you will find quite a lot of people becoming obese these days. The on the shelf packaged products and food items like pizza, burger etc. have added the younger generation to the race.
One food item among others, that has contributed to the diabetic disorder, is animal milk. Although milk has multiple nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Fat, and Proteins, consuming milk by the urban population has been contributing to diabetes because unlike in the olden days when people were consuming animal milk and doing a lot of manual work, they were able to absorb the nutrients by the very nature of their work but now the sedentary lifestyle of the urban class is not able to digest the nutrients in the milk. Also, the purity and quality of the milk that is being provided in the urban areas is another reason.
Medical science has all along been maintaining that once a diabetic, a life time diabetic. I have seen many of my relatives surviving on insulin and tablets their whole life. When this is a known fact, what is being done in educating the people about the lurking dangers of a disorder called diabetes?
An Indian speciality like Ayurveda has all along been maintaining that the excess sugar in the body can be controlled by a dietary change. This concept has now started picking up with many qualified doctors like MBBS are in the field to provide support to the diabetes patients in not only controlling their blood sugar but also in making them healthy both physically and mentally. Although the number of such doctors is limited because it needs absolute commitment to provide solace to the affected and not merely as a business.
Frankly speaking, any one will ask a question – Is diabetes really reversible? May be not a few years ago, but now WHO itself has admitted that there can be a remission in diabetic disorder. This is a great hope for the next gen. But the wise thing would be to get into a dietary change right now before it becomes late.
I was also diagnosed with diabetes in June 2022 but to my good fortune, I was introduced to an agency called Diabetes Free Forever located in Pune well in time. There are a few other agencies operating around India now providing support for diabetes reversal.
The important question that arises is these agencies get involved at a very late stage of a person’s suffering from this disorder for different reasons. There are people who have been diabetic for over 20 years and who have been on a higher dose of insulin and medication every passing year. When they approach these agencies, their job becomes tough first in convincing these people and their family that diabetes can be controlled with a protocol of detox, diet change, exercise, stress management and medical consultation. Like Dr. V. Mohan, a renowned diabetologist says EDUCATION is also a important and integral part of this exercise. Educating the people about the dangers of how much a body can be damaged by this disorder in a slow manner over a period of time. By the time people realise that their health has gone for a toss, a lot of internal damage would have taken place. Even then, with the introduction of the protocol, their diabetes position can be controlled if not completely reversed in many instances. It may take a little longer for such people to see the results.
As has been seen in the past, many a people get treated at these agencies and when their blood sugar comes back to normal, they become complacent forgetting the lesson learnt. Going back to the old lifestyle brings back the sugar disorder. Then they are totally disillusioned. Once you get control on your blood sugar, never go back to the old lifestyle. That is the Mantra because to come to this stage, it has taken a lot of effort, pain, suffering and sacrifice. Live a diabetes free life!
