WHAT IS FIBER?

Fiber is that part of the plant based foods which cannot be completely digested. It is found in plant based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. It is also known as roughage.

HOW MANY TYPES OF FIBER IS THERE IN THE PLANT FOODS?

Fiber in foods consists of two parts :

Most plant based foods contain both types of fiber viz., Soluble and Insoluble.

Soluble Fiber. This part of the fiber in food dissolves in water and becomes gel-like sustance which is consumed by the bacteria. The gel binds the other food items in the stomach thereby making them pass slowly through the digestive system.

Insoluble Fiber/Dietary fiber does not dissolve in water and travels through the digestive tract in tact as food moves through the gut.

Their difference are:

Good for colon health Improves digestion
Softens the stool making it easier to pass Lowers blood cholesterol & blood sugar
Helps avoid constipation. Supports healthy gut bacteria.
Items:Whole wheat (Khapli Gahu), Brown rice, Fruits and vegetables (broccoli, carrots), Corn bran, Peas and Legumes and nuts. Items:Fruits like apples, berries and Vegetables like Kale, Spinach, tomatoes, seeds like Chia Seeds and Flax seeds, Oats, Nuts like almonds and pecans.
